Kay’s Travel Wanderlist: September Edition

In Blog by Kay1 Comment

Hey y’all! Long time no talk! I’ve been missing the travel blogging scene this summer, as you can see, but I’ll explain myself in the next couple of posts. I have been traveling intermittently (namely, domestically) and it’s been great, albeit interspersed between hours of working a corporate job and tutoring grade school children to save money for traveling. I have a LOT of big news for you, but for now, I’m just going to leave you with a little lighthearted list of movies, reads, and songs to start your travel dreamin’ (and I hope you like it, because it’s coming monthly!). For most of these, the bolded headers are links you can click through where you can find out more about these movies, books, and fashion statements!

1. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

If you haven’t yet seen it, you should definitely change into pajamas right this instant, jump on the couch and turn it on. Not only did Ben Stiller do a phenomenal job in his role, but the movie is filled with gorgeous scenes and landscapes that will make your wanderlusting mouth water. And then you’ll start packing your backpack and planning a trip somewhere awesome. I watched it three times in one weekend, it was that good.

2. Heima

This one’s an oldie but goodie. If you’ve ever thought about going to Iceland (which you should have at least once), it’s a must-see.The world-famous band, Sigur Rós, takes us inside their home, where they perform sweeping music for free in front of crowds of happy Icelandic people. I recommend watching this one right before bed, because you might just drift into a slumber of faraway places…

3. Etsy Globe Necklace

I found this adorable globe necklace on etsy, and while I haven’t yet bought one, I am definitely going to be ordering mine ASAP. I have a ton of travel-themed jewelry, from airplane necklaces to charm bracelets. Sorry, it’s a little feminine, but guys, if you are looking for a gift for a special girl in your life, this is a great option. They’re great as a conversation-starter as well as a daily reminder that travel is always in my heart!

4. Amelie

Parles-tu français? It’s okay if you don’t, because this quirky little French movie comes with subtitles! This movie is full of French humor and street scenes that will make you want to hop on a plane to Paris, rent an apartment, and look out the window while eating une baguette avec fromage. It’s a treat for the eyes and a wonderful feel-good flick.

5. A House Somewhere

I’m knees deep in reading this book right now and I am absolutely loving it. This is a collection of travel stories from basically everywhere in the world, and these writers are amazing, using language to put readers right into the destination and the experience. At times I feel like I can even hear the sounds or smell the scents. I’m about three-quarters of the way through and I can barely put this book down!

6. Map Sweater

If you can’t tell, I love world map-themed things. I bought this sweater at a local boutique called Blue Elephant recently, and though it was a little pricey ($38 at full price!) I decided to splurge a little and rekindle/show off my love for the world. Here it is on me (pictured below).

7. My September Playlist

Here are some tunes to get you moving! A few are from the Walter Mitty soundtrack (you’ll hear them throughout the movie) and the rest are from my own personal music library.

  • Wake Up – Arcade Fire
  • Hóppipolla – Sigur Rós
  • Mykonos – Fleet Foxes
  • Step Out – Jose Gonzales
  • Dirty Paws – Of Monsters and Men
  • Postcards from Italy – Beirut
  • Já Sei Namorar – Tribalistas
  • Do Better – Say Anything
  • Doorways – Radical Face
  • Elephant Gun – Beirut
  • Make This Leap – The Hunts

8. Inspirational Quote

We’ll end this month’s list with my favorite travel quote from Into the Wild:

“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.”

– Alexander “Supertramp” McCandless (Jon Krakauer)

That’s all for September’s wanderlist! Stay tuned for more great news and good vibes, and share your recommendations in the comments! If I like them, I will feature them in October’s edition (and give you a shout out, of course). As always, keep your traveling heart alive!

Here’s a photo of me with a bottle of honey wine at the Ethiopian restaurant here in Houston! I could get used to this no silverware thing…
