I’m often students’ go-to resource for traveling abroad, and I usually get a lot of the same questions. Here are some of the most popular ones and my answers to them.
How do you fund your travels?
I get money from a job at home and from running this website. When I was in college, I planned my summers to incorporate travel and saved money accordingly by working three jobs outside of class. I also apply for every scholarship, contest, and monetary opportunity on the map. Sometimes I actually win them, which is always exciting.
Do your parents pay for your trips?
Not anymore. When I was eighteen, my mother bought me my first flight to London as a graduation present. Since then I’ve primarily funded my own trips, like my trip to Eastern Europe, my spring break in Turkey and my three-month trip to Southeast Asia.
Isn’t traveling alone scary/unsafe/not fun?
No to all three! Of course, it has its pros and cons, but overall traveling alone is mostly a great experience. I’ve learned so much from my solo travels that I don’t think I would have discovered on a family or group trip.
Where is your favorite place you’ve visited in the world?
This is a hard question! For now, it’s a three-way tie between the Philippines, Brazil, and Turkey.
Where do you want to go next?
Iceland. It’s number 1 on my list.
Can we meet up for a cup of coffee and talk travel?
Shoot me an email if we’re in the same city and we can make a plan!
