And the Winner Is…

Well, a few weeks ago, I decided somewhat on a whim to enter Nomadic Matt’s 12-Day Trip to Europe contest. So, I decided it would be funny/embarrassing/heartwarming to write a song about why I wanted to go. Well, as I sat in a coffee shop on campus late one night, a friend of mine suggested that I turn that song into a rap. That’s precisely what I did, and here was the resulting post/video.

And, with great elation and disbelief, I’m here announcing to you that…I WON! When I first found out, I cried. Literally, tears streaming down my face, sobbing my heart out, crying. Then I screamed, ran around, and danced. Then I called all of my friends. Then I cried again, posted a Facebook status, and now I’m here. Today Nomadic Matt posted the official announcement on his website, and the reality really struck me. This is so surreal.

So what does this mean?

Well, it means I’m going to Budapest, Prague, and Vienna this winter with my housing, transportation, and airfare included. It’s real, and it’s happening. I’m hoping to go this December, so if any of you have any suggestions or will be nearby, please let me know! I can’t believe my luck, but I just know that this will be the trip of a lifetime.

And what does this mean for you?

I’ll be holding a small (but real!) giveaway right before I depart. The winner will receive something trip-related from me, to be determined in the future. It’s a thank-you to all of YOU who supported me, spoke kind words on my behalf, followed me through my travels this summer, and gave me great ideas for the future. It’s you fellow travelers who inspire me to do these kinds of things.

On a final note,

I’d really like to thank Nomadic MattΒ for this amazing opportunity. He’s a really genuine, intelligent guy who I greatly admire in every way. I’d love to do what he does — traveling for a living. And maybe one day I will. But right now I am thanking him profusely for giving me the gift of travel. It’s truly a blessing that can be hard to come by sometimes. He’s a wonderful blogger and writer, and I hope you’ll stop by his site if you haven’t already and give him the recognition he deserves! GO MATT! πŸ™‚

Anyway, that’s my big news for now. Look out for my Tuesday tips tomorrow! Keep it real, y’all.

  6. A tiny suggestion for you – if you have some extra time when in Vienna, make the short trip to visit Bratislava also, even for a half day. It’s really near and it’s a quite charming and somewhat underappreciated city.

But Vienna is amazing with no shortage of wonderful things to see, so I guess it makes no sense to say you’ll have “extra time” there. You’ll just have to choose!
